Tractomotive Tractors & Lineup
Tractomotive was an American heavy equipment manufacturer founded in 1945, specializing in construction machinery, particularly wheel loaders. The company's origins trace back to its initial focus on building shovel loaders for Allis Chalmers crawlers, leveraging the mechanical expertise of the era's leading industrial players. In 1948, Tractomotive made a significant breakthrough by introducing wheel loaders, which were developed based on Allis Chalmers farm tractors. This innovation marked the company's entry into the burgeoning market of construction and earthmoving equipment. Tractomotive's products were strategically distributed through Allis Chalmers' extensive dealer network, which helped establish its presence in the industry. The close association with Allis Chalmers culminated in the company's acquisition by the latter in 1959. Following the acquisition, Tractomotive was integrated into Allis Chalmers' industrial equipment division, where it continued to contribute to the development of construction machinery. However, the company's trajectory took a downturn when its Deerfield, Illinois factory, which was later under Fiat-Allis ownership, closed in 1980. This marked the end of Tractomotive's independent operations, as it was fully absorbed into the larger industrial conglomerate.
