The 20% Steering Rule

ASABE safety criteria dictate that at least 20% of the combined tractor-implement weight must remain on the front axle during road transport. Dropping below this causes steering loss, front-wheel bounce, and fatal rollover risks.

Overhang Leverage Factor

An implement’s tipping force is not just its weight—it is weight multiplied by distance behind the rear axle. A 1,400 lb round bale extended 4 feet exerts the same tipping moment as a 2,800 lb implement mounted 2 feet back.

Tire Liquid Ballast

If front suitcase weights are insufficient, non-corrosive liquid ballast (such as Rim Guard beet juice or calcium chloride solution) can add 200–800 lbs directly into tire cavities without adding mechanical stress to wheel bearings.
