Advance-Rumely was a pioneering American agricultural machinery manufacturer that played a significant role in the development of mechanized farming in the early 20th century. The company was formed in 1911 through the merger of two established firms: the Advance Thresher Company and the Rumely Company. The Rumely Company, founded in 1853 in La Porte, Indiana, initially gained prominence for its threshing machines and later expanded into steam engines. The merger brought together the expertise of both companies, leading to the development of the iconic OilPull tractor in 1910. This innovative machine featured an oil-cooled engine, which was a significant technological advancement at the time, providing improved cooling efficiency and reliability for farmers. Advance-Rumely's tractors were known for their durability and performance, making them popular among American farmers during the early 20th century. However, the company faced challenges in the late 1920s as it attempted to enter the market for smaller tractors with models like the DoAll and the 6A, which struggled to gain traction. In 1931, Advance-Rumely was acquired by Allis-Chalmers, a major player in the agricultural machinery industry. This acquisition marked the end of Advance-Rumely as an independent brand, as Allis-Chalmers discontinued production of Advance-Rumely models and integrated the company's technology and expertise into its own product lines.
