Allis-Chalmers was a pioneering American manufacturer of agricultural and industrial equipment that played a significant role in shaping 20th-century farming technology. Founded in 1901 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the company emerged from the merger of several manufacturing firms, including Edward P. Allis Company, a respected builder of heavy machinery. Allis-Chalmers quickly established itself as an innovator, achieving a breakthrough in 1914 with the introduction of the first rubber-tired tractor, the Model 10-18. This marked the beginning of the company's illustrious tractor legacy. Throughout the early and mid-20th century, Allis-Chalmers expanded its product lines to include a wide range of agricultural machinery, such as combines, balers, and tillage equipment, alongside its robust tractor lineup. The introduction of iconic models like the WD, the first tractor with a fully enclosed cab, and the D-series tractors, which became synonymous with reliability and innovation, cemented the brand's reputation. However, despite its early successes, Allis-Chalmers faced financial difficulties in the 1970s and 1980s due to increased competition and economic challenges. In 1985, the company filed for bankruptcy, leading to the sale of its farm equipment division to Klockner-Humboldt-Deutz (KHD) of Germany.
