Valmet
Finland • 87 Models
Valmet, originally known as Valtion Metallitehdas (State Metal Factory), was a Finnish industrial powerhouse with roots in arms manufacturing before transitioning into the agricultural machinery sector. Founded in 1920, Valmet initially focused on producing military equipment and machinery for Finland's defense needs. The company's foray into the tractor market began in 1951, marking a pivotal shift in its business strategy. Valmet quickly gained recognition for its robust and reliable tractors, which were designed to withstand the harsh Nordic climate. By 1958, the company had expanded its reach internationally, exporting tractors to various countries. A significant milestone in Valmet's history was the establishment of a factory in Brazil in 1960, which underscored its commitment to global growth and diversification. In 1979, Valmet entered into a strategic partnership with Volvo, forming the Volvo BM Valmet brand, which further strengthened its presence in the global tractor market. Valmet acquired Volvo's share in 1985, consolidating its position as a leading tractor manufacturer. The company also collaborated with Massey-Ferguson, producing tractors at Massey's factory in France, which demonstrated its ability to adapt and thrive in a competitive industry. Valmet remained a government-owned entity until 1993, when it merged with Sisu, a Finnish truck manufacturer. As part of this merger, the Valmet name was gradually phased out and replaced by Valtra, a brand that had already been associated with Valmet's implements and forestry machinery. Today, while the Valmet name has been largely absorbed into Valtra and other entities, its legacy lives on in the technologies and industrial solutions provided by Valmet Oyj, a global leader in process technologies, automation systems, and services for industries such as pulp, energy, and automotive manufacturing.
