Volvo's journey into the tractor industry began in 1943 when the Swedish automotive giant partnered with Bolinder-Munktell, a well-established tractor manufacturer. This collaboration marked Volvo's strategic expansion into agricultural machinery, leveraging Bolinder-Munktell's expertise. The partnership proved successful, leading Volvo to acquire Bolinder-Munktell in 1950. For several years, both brands continued to operate, producing similar tractors until 1957, when they unified under the joint Bolinder-Munktell-Volvo brand. This consolidation strengthened Volvo's presence in the tractor market. In 1973, the brand was rebranded to Volvo BM to capitalize on the growing recognition of the Volvo name globally. Volvo BM continued to innovate, producing a range of tractors that combined Swedish engineering with modern technology. However, in 1978, Volvo entered into a joint venture with Valmet, a Finnish machinery manufacturer, reflecting the company's strategic shift towards collaboration. This joint venture eventually led to Volvo selling its entire tractor division to Valmet in 1985, marking the end of Volvo's direct involvement in the tractor industry. Valmet, which later became Valtra, integrated Volvo BM's technology and expertise into its own product lines, ensuring the legacy of Volvo's tractor division lived on.
